all about psychedelic research

Apologies for the lack of updates from Blossom, and welcome to all new subscribers!

I was honoured to recently talk with David Drapkin on the Psychedelics Today podcast. We discussed the work I've been doing here over the last five years and examined psychedelic research globally.

The reasons for my absence was a lovely honeymoon in Thailand, which I can recommend everyone visiting at least once. I'm now caught up on the research (thank you Dilara for the support the last few weeks) and also just wrapped up the October recap.

If you enjoy hearing and seeing (vs reading) more from me, please do join me at the Psychedelics Design conference on December 11th.

Now, let's dive back into the psychedelic research!

1 Cost-effectiveness of midomafetamine-assisted therapy (MDMA-AT) in chronic and treatment-resistant post-traumatic stress disorder of moderate or higher severity

This cost-effectiveness analysis compares MDMA-assisted therapy (MDMA-AT) versus placebo with therapy (PT) for chronic PTSD treatment over 5 years. Using a health state-transition model, it finds MDMA-AT to be cost-effective with an ICER of $83,845 per QALY (below the $150,000 willingness-to-pay threshold), despite higher intervention costs ($48,376 vs $12,376), due to reduced healthcare visits and better health outcomes (0.377 QALY increment).

2 Enhanced visual contrast suppression during peak psilocybin effects: Psychophysical results from a pilot randomized controlled trial

This placebo-controlled study (n=6) investigates how psilocybin (25mg) affects visual surround suppression compared to placebo (100mg niacin). The study finds increased surround suppression effects under psilocybin, with stronger suppression correlating with more intense subjective visual effects.

3 Global Trends in Psychedelic Microdosing: Demographics, Substance Testing Behavior, and Patterns of Use

This online survey (n=6,193; 2,488 microdosers) examines differences between exclusive microdosers and those who use both micro and macrodoses of psychedelics. The study finds exclusive microdosers were typically older, more likely to be female and non-Caucasian, with psilocybin (74.5%) and LSD (34.4%) being the most commonly used substances, primarily for general wellbeing (73.0%).

1 Psychedelic Research Recap October 2024

Psychedelic research in October 2024 covered a lot of ground, from how these drugs can help people to how they change the brain. Scientists looked at MDMA, psilocybin, and even the less-common 2C-B. They wanted to understand how these substances affect our personalities, feelings, and mental well-being.

A big question this month was how the experience during a psychedelic trip connects to its benefits later. For example, one study looked at whether stopping antidepressants before psilocybin therapy changes how well it works for depression. Others explored how the intensity of a ketamine or psilocybin trip relates to improvements in depression and addiction.

Researchers also looked at how MDMA affects emotions and personality in healthy people, and how psychedelics might help autistic adults with social anxiety and distress. Some studies focused on how these drugs change our thinking patterns and ability to cope with life's challenges. One even looked at whether psychedelics make us more empathetic.

Finally, scientists studied how psychedelics work on a biological level, examining their effects on brain cells, brain waves, and specific receptors. They also compared 2C-B to psilocybin and looked at combining small doses of psilocybin with neurofeedback training.

1 Why Psychedelic Research is Booming: Current Trends and Hurdles (Podcast)

Psychedelic research is booming, and a recent podcast episode explored how we can keep up with this explosion of information. I was interviewed on Psychedelics Today about the challenges and trends in the field. My platform, Blossom, catalogs research papers, trials, courses, and companies, showcasing the rapid growth of psychedelic science. I shared how the number of studies has increased dramatically, from barely enough for a weekly newsletter to almost daily additions.

We discussed what's fueling this research boom and the roadblocks that remain. I offered insights into the trends I've observed, highlighting how research can change public opinion about psychedelics. We also touched on the importance of real-world data, and how retreat centers and underground communities contribute valuable knowledge.

The conversation also covered the culture around psychedelics in the Netherlands, where psilocybin truffles are legal. I discussed drug development, including tweaking existing molecules, and the regulatory landscape, referencing the Lykos and FDA situation. We also considered the economics of psychedelic therapy, predicting that insurance coverage will be a major topic soon. Finally, I discussed my work with FLO coaching and how coaching, ACT, and psilocybin can work together.

2 Psychedelics Design Conference (Event)

The 200-page analysis maps out the hurdles and offers clear strategies to ensure these life-changing treatments can reach patients who urgently need them. Dive into the...

The Bloom #173 Free Edition long-term follow-up The psychedelic research landscape continues to evolve at a remarkable pace. Last month, I tracked 193 new studies and added the 11 most significant ones to our database. In this monthly recap, I've synthesized what we've learned from these latest findings. Two standout studies examine the long-term outcomes from both clinical trials and observational research. The durability of psychedelic effects represents a critical area of investigation—one...

The Bloom #172 Free Edition what do you think? What happens during a psychedelic trip? How can we minimise harms? Do psychedelics reduce feelings of shame? Why do people trip? Do researchers get funding for psychedelic research? Are social workers open to psychedelic therapy? These are but some of the questions that 14 surveys (about one a day) have asked in published research this month. We cover the first three in the research papers below. In other new research, we look at a new...
